I grew up in rural west Auckland in an area called Taupaki.

If I wasn’t travelling around the country to follow my father’s powerboat racing, I would be playing around at my family’s sawmill and pre-nail plant in West Auckland or water-skiing.

I started water-skiing at a young age which has continued into my adult years where I travelled across the ditch to spend some time riding with Australia’s best wakeboarders.

While I was away overseas, I received an S.O.S from my father’s commercial construction company, that a labour shortage was going on and my help was needed.

I returned home and began working as an apprentice builder. However, I had caught the travel bug so once I had achieved my BCITO qualification and met my now wife Alex, we scrimped and saved and went on an overseas adventure. We spent 9 months backpacking South East Asia, South America and America.

I made some great friends and loved travelling the world with my soulmate. Five of the biggest highlights from my travels have got to be backpacking South East Asia with no fixed abode, no plans, just a wild adventure going wherever we wanted, whenever we wanted.

From seeing Halong Bay in Vietnam, the infamous 35-hour bus ride through the Vietnam jungle to do a border crossing into Laos with chickens, goats and birds on the bus, getting to experience the sunrise over the Machu Picchu in Peru and proposing to my now wife outside the Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas, it’s evident that travel has continued to be a passion of mine and Alex’s (my wife). We love family trips and we try to get away once a year somewhere new and exciting with our children.

While I was doing my Apprenticeship, James took me under his wing to teach me the trade and to give me the skills that I needed to become a great craftsman. It was easy for James and me to find a common ground with James and his father both working for my family’s construction company for over 30 years. I had known him from a very young age.

I learnt a lot from James and the experience in the commercial sector set me up to strive for bigger things. It taught me invaluable skills such as how to work with a tight budget and think creatively to maximise the clients’ budgets and needs. It truly opened my eyes to the world of owning and managing a business and I knew that it was what I wanted.

One of my standout jobs in the commercial sector was to construct a Commercial subdivision consisting of 26 commercial units over the span of 6 years.

After a switch from the commercial sector, James and myself went into residential construction and we quickly gained a very loyal and committed clientele base, while also completing our own spec builds as well. During this time of just James and myself onsite, the conversation quickly turned to Best Nest Building Company.

We put pen to paper and in 2016, Best Nest Building Company Limited was formed. Our dreams of delivering quality building services to New Zealand had finally become a reality.  Not only has Best Nest Building Company grown over the years, but so has my own family as I now have 2 wonderful children, Miescha 6 and Jett 4.
